How to Improve AI Instructions with Rewrite

Use Rewrite to restyle a step's directions or a custom AI tool's instructions by the writing guidelines, then refine them in a conversation.

Rewrite improves a set of AI instructions — a workflow step's Directions or a custom AI tool's instructions — by the guidelines in How to Write Effective AI Instructions. It opens a conversation: the AI rewrites the instructions, saves them, shows you what changed and why, and then makes any further changes you ask for.

Rewrite is available to the thunk's owner and admins.

Concepts

Rewrite edits the saved instructions

Rewrite works on the instructions as they are saved. Each change it makes is saved straight away, so you do not need to accept it before it takes effect. In return, every change can be undone: each one appears as a card with a Revert button.

If you were editing the instructions when you opened Rewrite, your edit is saved first, so Rewrite starts from what you wrote. If the instructions change while the conversation is open, Rewrite does not overwrite that change. It rereads the instructions and makes its change again on top of them.

It changes only the text

Rewrite changes the instruction text and nothing else. Some improvements belong somewhere other than the text, and Rewrite suggests those for you to act on:

  • A tool to build. Fixed logic, arithmetic and repeated lookups are more reliable in a tool than in prose. Rewrite checks the tools the thunk already has first, and suggests a new one only when none of them does the work.

  • A tool to enable. When an existing tool would do the work but is switched off for this step or tool, Rewrite asks you to enable it rather than suggesting a new one.

  • A property change. A rule about what a value may be, such as an allowed list of options or a required format, belongs on the property, where it is applied exactly.

The conversation can look up the thunk's tools, and a step's input and output properties, to make these suggestions.

One conversation per set of instructions

Each step's directions, and each custom AI tool's instructions, have their own Rewrite conversation. Selecting Rewrite again on the same instructions reopens that conversation, with its history.

Details

Run a rewrite

  1. Open the step, or the custom AI tool, whose instructions you want to improve.

  2. Click in the instructions to show the editing toolbar, and select Rewrite. When the panel is narrow, Rewrite is in the toolbar's … menu.

  3. The first time, Rewrite starts by rewriting the whole text by the guidelines. Wait for the Instructions updated card.

Read the change card

Each change appears as a card headed Instructions updated, with a one-line summary and:

  • The original and the rewritten text side by side. Changes shows a word-level comparison; Rendered shows both versions formatted.

  • Suggested tools, each with a Create tool button. Creating a tool starts building it and shows an Open its builder link, which opens the tool in a new tab so you can keep working in the conversation.

  • Tools to enable, naming the tool and the part of the instructions that needs it. Switch it on in the step's or tool's tool configuration. See Control which tools a step can use.

  • Suggested property changes, naming the property and what to change. Open the property to make the change.

  • Guidelines applied, listing each guideline and what it changed, if anything.

  • Other recommendations, for structural advice that is neither a tool nor a property change.

Ask for further changes

Type a request in the conversation, or select one of the suggestions under the card:

  • Ask for a specific change, for example "Make step 2 shorter" or "Use the existing CRM lookup". Rewrite makes exactly that change and leaves the rest of the text alone.

  • Ask a question, for example "Why did you move the date check?". Rewrite answers without changing the instructions.

  • Ask it to use a tool you just created. Once a suggested tool exists, ask Rewrite to rewrite the instructions to use it.

Undo a change

Select Revert on a change card to restore the instructions to what they were before that change. Revert works only while the instructions are still exactly as that change left them. If they have changed since, Revert says so; ask Rewrite for the change you want instead.
